With summer comes moments to appreciate and remember. Graduation for some, marriage for others, or maybe even a new baby. A gathering of close friends for the ultimate pool party or BBQ, the annual family vacation, or maybe a birthday — all are occasions worthy of keepsakes and photographs. Whatever the event, with a little creativity you can incorporate your favourite photos or souvenirs into a framing project, creating an original piece of art to personalize your home decor.

Whether your desire is to frame a photo or other memento, there are many ways to make an object or an image a part of your home. A simple method to frame a 3-D piece or a photograph is by creating a shadow box. Choose a deep frame so the backing can be installed (using small nails) away from the glass, thus leaving a space inside the frame for your piece. Then select a mat colour that will complement the piece being framed. The glass is held in place with strips of the mat or foamboard, which are glued to the inside of the moulding with two-sided adhesive. Once this is put together, a dust guard (Kraft paper) at the back and a sawtooth or wire hanger for mounting on the wall are all that's needed. Or, if your frame is thick enough, you can simply stand it on a solid table.
Other great frame ideas are bento boxes for children's artwork or small items, which can easily be rearranged. Also, using recycled materials like old farmhouse windows can provide a rustic country feel. Or for a contemporary home, try simply mounting images between two panes of glass.
This summer, why not enjoy collecting and creating memorabilia and transforming them into decorative works of art to enhance your home?
